CNIC INTERNATIONAL INCOMING FELLOWSHIPS FOR YOUNG GROUP LEADERS

The CNIC International Incoming Fellowship (CNIC IIF) programme is a further step in the CNIC Training Plan’s philosophy of investing in people. Purpose The programme aims to increase the European-wide mobility possibilities for training and career development of experienced researchers in the cardiovascular research area. The CNIC IIF has been designed to support trans-national mobility of these researchers and to broaden and deepen their individual competence, particularly in terms of acquisition of complementary skills needed to attain or strengthen a more senior leading independent position in biomedical research. The programme offers fellowships for experienced researchers at two stages of their careers, depending on their experience and profile: 1) Starting Fellowships (SF), and 2) Advanced Fellowships (AF). Applicants are free to propose a research topic within any of the research Departments at the CNIC. The only limitation will be that the proposed research fits within the CNIC’s overall focus on cardiovascular research. The CNIC IIF Programme will offer a total of 24 positions during the COFUND grant life (four years) in the incoming mobility type. There will be a call every year, offering six fellowships: 4 Starting Fellowships (SF) and 2 Advanced Fellowships (AF). In both cases, the duration of the fellowship will be of 3 years. Eligible researchers The target group of the CNIC IIF Programme is experienced researchers. To be eligible, researchers must, at the time of the deadline for submission of their individual fellowship application, fulfil the following requirements: 1) Be in possession of a doctoral degree, independently of the time taken to acquire it; 2) Demonstrate a minimum of 3 years’ postdoctoral training in centres of international reference; and 3) Accomplish the mobility criterium: “Applicants must not have resided or carried out their main activity in Spain for more than twelve months in the three years immediately prior to the reference date. Short stays such as holidays will not be taken into account”. Activities The main activity of the CNIC IIF Programme is the awarding of fellowships for young group leaders, with the objective of providing training and career development. The fellowship includes a research project prepared by the research fellow in coordination with the CNIC research department of choice, tailored to the needs of the researcher to allow him/her to achieve a realistic and well-defined objective in terms of gaining new experience to strengthen his/her new position as an independent researcher (leading research projects, management and organisational skills, building collaborations, student supervision, etc.). Description of work The current final report includes a summary of the Calls 1, 2, 3 and 4. There have been already offered 24 fellowships, 6 in each call (4 Starting and 2 Advanced). Calls were published in a specific section of the CNIC’ website (www.cnic.es) and widely advertised in international scientific journals and other web portals, as well as announced through the CNIC account in twitter.
