Project objective
Laser based imaging in next generation low emission gas turbine combustors will be performed to elucidate the role of acoustically excited instabilities and to develop means for their active control and prevention. Lean premixed (IP) combustion offers very low emissions of pollutants such as NOx but is particularly prone to such instabilities. Instabilities result from a coupling of the flame's heat release to an acoustic resonance in the combustor, which, at worst, can lead to catastrophic engine failure. So far these problems severely limit the use of LP combustion concepts in aero-engine design despite their potential for low emissions. The purpose of the present project is to measure important flame species, name temperature, and local fuel concentration using advanced laser diagnostics and to correlate this data with pollutant emissions and overall engine performance. The data will be compared to CFD calculations of the systems investigated and advanced active combustion control concepts will be tested. Measurements will be performed at the Cambridge UGTP (University Gas Turbine Partnership) on both model and industrial scale combustors and there will be access to some of the most advanced actively controlled combustion facilities available in Europe.
