Project objective
The Applicant Peter Portius is a young prize-winning synthetic chemist from the Humboldt University in former East Germany whose work on azides is already having an international impact. At the end of his Fellowship the Applicant intends to establish a research group for designing new materials particularly by the photochemical decomposition of azide precursors. This Fellowship will give him the photochemical training needed to realise his vision on returning to Germany. We will exploit a new and highly innovative approach to alkane complexes, which combines chemical synthesis with the unique range of state-of-the-art spectroscopie equipment which is available at the University of Nottingham. This equipment is already acting as the focus of significant international collaboration. The Nottingham group is highly multidisciplinary, with both fundamental and applied chemistry. It is a world-leader in photochemistry and supercritical fluid technology and has recently won awards for interdisciplinary research and for industrial innovation. The Fellowship work programme coincides with several objectives of the 6th Framework particularly in the area of nanotechnology especially Topic 3.4.2.2, Mastering Chemistry and creating new pathways for multifunctional materials. The Fellowship is within the field of the proposed Network of Excellence SusDeCAT and SUPERFLUIDS and several proposed research training networks. The Fellowship training programme will not only include the scientific expertise of the Nottingham research group but will also exploit the wider University of Nottingham Career Development programme as well as the Royal Society of Chemistry 1-year formal assessment programme which provides a range of valuable managerial and leadership skills for young chemists. This project involves metal alkane-complexes, key intermediates in the activation of methane, a potential feedstock for a wide range of chemical.
