MARIE · Micro-Analysis of Acculturation among Russian Immigrants and Emigrants

Project objective

There is almost no research devoted to emigrants in Russia and few studies about Russians abroad. Recent changes in the Russian society and the globalization make acculturation important in science and public discourse in Russia. The proposed project, which consists of three studies, examines acculturation of exchange students and sojourners in Moscow and of Russian immigrants in the Netherlands, Germany, the United Kingdom and the U.S.A. The study elaborates on the PhD study carried out by Irina Galchenko (date of completion: August 2005). The first study (dealing with acculturation of Russians in the United Kingdom and the U.S.A.) examines the role played by immigration history, policy, and vitality of community of Russians in mental health and adaptation to the British and American culture. The second study applies a longitudinal design to examine acculturation of exchange students and expatriates in Russia (measuring several acculturation aspects one, three, and five months after arrival.) The third study compares processes of acculturation of Russians in the Netherlands, Germany, the United Kingdom and the U.S.A. in order to find out which factors influence acculturation success and failure. The proposed project aims at (i) understanding more of adaptation processes in emigrants in Russia and in Russian immigrants in some Western countries; (ii) advancing our knowledge of acculturation processes by looking in more detail at the integration processes than commonly done; (iii) establishing firm links between Russian and Dutch scholars so as to facilitate their cooperation and enhance the quality of acculturation studies of both parties. After the project, Galchenko will have the knowledge and skills to set up her own line of teaching and research in Russia in the area of cross-cultural psychology, with an emphasis on acculturation.
