Video Quality Driven Multimedia Streaming in Mobile Wireless Networks

QoSTREAM – Video Quality Driven Multimedia Streaming in Mobile Wireless Networks is an FP7 Marie Curie International Research Staff Exchange Scheme (IRSES) project. The project started on February 1st 2012 and ended on January 31st 2016. The main objective of QoSTREAM was to establish new partnerships and to reinforce already existing paths of cooperation between participating European and non-European research institutions through a coordinated multiannual joint research programme in the field of multimedia processing/communications and quality of experience for real-time multimedia streaming applications over emerging wireless networks. Due to the complementary expertise of the chosen participating institutions, enhanced efficiency of multimedia delivery schemes in this research programme has been pursued through the inter-disciplinary combination of: i) applications of state-of-the-art multimedia processing and compression schemes such as scalable video coding, error resilience, network-adaptive media, video analysis; ii) advanced communication techniques such as fountain coding, network coding, source-aware resource allocation, packet scheduling and prioritization; and iii) light-weight video quality assessment algorithms suitable for implementations embedded in all sorts of mobile receivers; all of these contributing to practical and optimal system design. The project brought together leading and complementary research teams in Europe and in Brazil, Japan, South Africa, USA and Singapore in the field of multimedia processing and compression, communications and networking, video quality assessment and user experience enhancement, machine learning and embedded system design. All were willing to share their expertise and accumulated knowledge. The synergy and intensive collaboration between researchers in different sub-disciplines led to high-quality research results, strengthening of the ties between the participating institutions and fostered new joint projects. Special attention was paid to the development of complementary skills of early-stage researchers, allowing them to acquire the skills needed to themselves become research leaders.

Project objective

Robust and efficient multimedia transmission over wireless networks to mobile users is a challenging task due to large bandwidth consumption, quality of service (QoS) requirements, real-time and power constraints, heterogeneous receiver capabilities and error-prone wireless transmission environment. The necessity for seamless access and exchange of large amount of multimedia content anytime and anywhere by mobile users is driving intensive research within this field as it provides a number of business opportunities through commercial multimedia applications provisioning such as digital TV, video-on-demand, video conferencing, 3D TV, interactive gaming, social networking, etc. To address the ever-increasing consumers’ requirements and ensure QoS, the emerging solutions for multimedia streaming over next generation wireless networks need to be adaptive to the specific conditions of the network and the receiver devices and take into account each individual user experience. Current state-of-the-art approaches in multimedia processing and communications are not driven by the quality of the users’ experience and the project proposed is aimed at addressing this problem. The goal is to design a system that would be able to dynamically adjust the multimedia signal processing and communication parameters based on the appropriate video quality feedback provided by the receiver devices themselves, thus assuring optimal delivery for each specific configuration of the mobile wireless network. The main objective of this Project is to establish new partnerships and to reinforce already existing paths of cooperation between participating European and non‐European research institutions through a coordinated multiannual joint research programme in the field of quality-driven multimedia processing and communications for multimedia streaming over emerging wireless networks.
