Bistable Nano-Objects on Surfaces
The project objectives were, in a first place, to elaborate and synthesize nano-systems of molecular materials immobilized on surfaces: nano-layers or nano-particles. In a second place, the project goal was to study collective and individual physical properties (structural, morphologic, magnetic, electrical or optical) of bistable nano-objects. In a third place, this strategy might be broadened to address individual objects and to explore new possibility of switching at the nanoscale. Nine main progresses have been obtained towards the realization of these main objectives: 1) An efficient sequential growth in solution of the bistable CuMo coordination network on several substrates (silicon, platinum, platinum dots on silicon oxide), and the preservation of its photo-magnetic properties for thicknesses lower than 10 nm. 2) The grafting of spin crossover nano-particles on a still unexplored substrate, which is cheap and easy to handle: paper, and the preservation of their bistable properties. 3) The observation of a re-appearance of cooperativity in ultra-small spin-crossover nano-particles; with the first synthesis description of a series of ultra-small nano-particles, (smaller than 15 nm), and the proof that size-dependent elastic properties of the particles, which are related to the strain induced by the surface, could lead to unusual spin crossover properties observed at low size. 4) The characterization of the mechanical properties of spin crossover towards the use of such objects as actuators. 5) The description of the electrical properties of spin crossover objects at the meso-scale 6) The light induced modulation of charge transport phenomena in spin crossover micro-rods 7) The electric field-induced spin-state switching in spin crossover 8) The adaptation of bulk samples to make electronic devices 9) The development of metallic (platinum and palladium) nano-particle synthesis, towards their self-assembly with molecular components, and their addressing at the nano-scale Concerning the fellow’s research career development and re-/integration, he obtained a permanent researcher position at CNRS, Toulouse in 2014. He supervised the work of six students and one post-doc and attended to seven conferences to present his results.

Project objective
Coordination networks are molecular systems that show various physical properties (magnetic, electrical, optical, etc.). Some networks have the particularity to have bistable states, which are interesting towards the development of memories, switches or sensors. The study of the evolution of their properties at the nanometer scale let us foresee the development of miniaturized systems that can be included in more complex devices. The objective of this project is to develop synthesis tools of bistable coordination nanosystems on inorganic surfaces. We plan to use simple techniques of surface chemistry that do not require expensive facilities. In a second time, we will characterize the physical properties of these systems and we will determine the specific effects of the size reduction to the nanometer scale. We will use very sensitive techniques, adapted to systems with few materials, for which the weakness of the signals is often a critical element. Finally, we will use these techniques to address the systems in a controlled manner. Indeed, in order to develop memory devices, it is necessary to write and read the information independently. We also plan to perform measurements in environmental conditions with the purpose of elaborating sensors.
