Results in brief

ADvanced Electric Powertrain Technology

The fully developed and tested ADEPT Virtual Platform (VP) is an overall comprehensive powertrain simulation modelling framework. It is created based upon the contributions of all recruited ADEPT Fellows. The multi-level model is built in pure Matlab / Simulink environment without usage of any additional expensive toolboxes. The range estimation of a vehicle is based on the loss model of the electrical machines, power converters. The VP also includes the thermal models of the electric motors (switched reluctance, synchronous reluctance and others types) and multi-level inverters which is a unique characteristic for this type of the novel simulator. This system is by default used to predict the operational ranges of the electric vehicles but can be easily expanded for other applications (power systems of the train, ship, aircraft, etc). The publically available access to all multi-level electrical vehicle models (systems, subsystems, devices, components, control algorithms, thermal and mechanical analysis features) and very detailed documentation are provided via web. page https://adept-itn.eu/virtual-library, https://github.com/adept-itn. Real-world applications have been tested using so called ‘Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) analysis’, enabled by the research on a Flexible E-propulsion testing platform that is used (a practical combination of hardware and software and theoretical models in one simulated system) to test the control system with real inputs and outputs, where the rest of the system and processes are simulated in real-time. The HiL is augmented by module integration technology and enables a qualitative and quantitative approach to develop and/or to test E-propulsion components since a highly realistic simulation of the components in a new combination of hardware, software and high level models in system is supported by a novel VP- library development environment. The user-friendly interface and direct access to the ADEPT VP allow to use the multi-scale models for analysis of the electromagnetic, thermal, mechanical behaviour, losses analysis, efficiency-maps predictions for wide social group (students, practicing engineers and scientists), and is open for further modifications, expansions, adaptations at all levels of the hierarchical modular structure of the simulation framework. More details are specified in the attached final report of the coordinator and all ADEPT fellows. All addressed objectives are successfully achieved via a full set of research lines, deliverables according to the formulated milestones. The overall training program is fully accomplished.

Project objective

The goal of the ADEPT program is to produce a virtual development environment for E-propulsion systems and to train and establish a multi-disciplinary research network. The ADEPT program will raise the profile and to improve career perspectives for 12 ESRs, and 2 ERs, offering a high-quality structured consortium providing personalized training opportunities in E-propulsion systems and in complementary skills (i.e. entrepreneurship). An intimate involvement in all aspects of the collaboration (research, knowledge transfer, secondments, workshops) along with an extensive training program in a wide range of fields (electromagnetics, thermal, mechanical, vibro-acoustic, control, vehicle integration of E-propulsion) will allow early-stage and experienced researchers to develop the technical proficiency and complementary skills required to make significant contributions to their professional careers. Through industry-academia partnerships, ADEPT will facilitate the uptake of scientific results in E-propulsion and industrial products and solutions.
