Promoting excellence in Life Sciences - Fostering transnational mobility and scientific exchange through co-funding of the EMBO Long-Term Fellowship Programme
The EMBO Long-Term Fellowship Programme (http://www.embo.org/funding-awards/fellowships/long-term-fellowships) supports international mobility and exchange in the molecular life sciences. Renowned for its attention to scientific excellence, the programme has funded thousands of talented young scientists since its establishment in the 1960s. EMBO Long-Term Fellowships support advanced research and training, awarding funds to postdoctoral scientists for research visits between European countries or when justified worldwide. Since 2001, the demand for EMBO Fellowships more than doubled, illustrating the continued demand for postdoctoral training in the life sciences. Both selection rounds in 2014 (spring and autumn) were supported by this COFUND project. Both calls had been publicly announced in various media including the Euraxess and the EMBO webpage. After the respective deadlines the submitted proposals (789 in spring 2014 and 859 in autumn 2014) were evaluated by the EMBO Fellowship Committee, a panel of internationally renowned experts covering the main scientific disciplines of the modern life sciences. In total 241 co-funded fellowships could be awarded, 119 and 122 per respective call. This represents a significant increase of around 30% compared to the prior year when no COFUND grant was available. All selected fellows were highly trained and skilled researchers. As trans-national mobility is a requirement, the COFUND project had and will continue to have a huge impact on the European Research Area. The selected fellows enjoyed the benefits and the high prestige of an EMBO Long-Term Fellowship - co-funded by a Marie Curie Action. Project objective
The EMBO Fellowship Programme supports international mobility and exchange in all areas of the life sciences. Renowned for its commitment to scientific excellence, the programme has funded thousands of talented early career scientists since its establishment in the 1960s. EMBO Long-Term Fellowships support advanced research and training by awarding funds to postdoctoral scientists for research visits between European countries or when justified worldwide. Since 2002, the number of applications for EMBO Fellowships has more than doubled, creating a situation in which the number of excellent proposals exceed the available funds. In 2007 and 2010, EMBO successfully applied for co-funding, which made it possible to award a significantly higher number of fellowships. In order to be able to meet the continued high demand for postdoctoral training in the life sciences EMBO applied to the 2012 COFUND call. Continued co-funding of the EMBO Long-Term Fellowship Programme will not only allow selected fellows to enjoy the benefits and high prestige of an EMBO Fellowship – co-funded by a Marie Curie Action – but will also promote the further development of the European Research Area.
