Grenoble Quantum Engineering Doctoral Programme

Quantum theory has fundamentally changed our understanding of how light and matter behave at extremely small scales, with ground-breaking applications for instance in information and communication technologies (ICT), microelectronics, etc. A second quantum revolution is on the verge of taking the theory to novel technological consequences; quantum technologies are expected to have a major impact on future industrial developments in a broad range of fields: secure communication, environmental monitoring, healthcare, material design, energy efficiency, energy production, security. This implies the development of new devices and systems for cryptography, sensing, imaging, metrology, communications, memories, computation and simulation. The development of this very high-level technology will require well-trained quantum engineers, that have a very strong scientific backgound as well as an industrial vision. GreQuE DP will train 25 PhD students within the University of Grenoble-Alpes (UGA) involving top level academic research laboratories in physics, mathematics & computer sciences, partnering R&D centres and enterprises in France and Europe. The training of these researchers of tomorrow aims to make them fully aware about all the exciting opportunities of this emerging field, and provide them, in addition to excellence in science, with the transferable skills needed to develop quantum technologies to application level. GreQuE 25 ESRs contribute to expand exploratory research on quantum technologies and extend it to support research aiming at higher technology readiness levels (TRL). This culture favours naturally the synergies and early orientation of the research topics to be able to translate the basic research until proof of concepts and further to higher TRL, resulting in further exploitation of results. The project mobilises the key local, national and international industrial players. Each PhD fellow will benefit from a 2 to 6 months secondment in one of these companies. GreQuE will mprove the dissemination about the potential benefits of quantum technologies. A broad range of communication actions towards the general public incl. high school pupils and teachers, university students, and policy makers have been implemented, and GreQuE doctoral program will complete them to further enhance the awareness and general knowledge currently lacking about Quantum Technologies. The project will also implement extensive dissemination actions towards private sector and scientists, contributing to the 5th key action of the plan linked to improving the coordination between different existing research programmes on quantum technologies.

Project objective

Quantum engineering is a novel domain of research, built on fundamental research carried out in the last 20 years all over the world. Quantum technologies offer radically new materials and devices for the next century, in sectors such as security, energy, communications, or healthcare. To transform such disruptive scientific concepts into real life benefits it is crucial to develop research aiming at higher technology readiness levels. To ensure that Europe takes the leadership in this coming quantum revolution, we must train next generation quantum engineers, by offering doctoral training in interconnected domains with the highest scientific standards, while equally providing an opening to the industrial world.Grenoble is world renowned for its fundamental research institutes in condensed matter physics, nanosciences, computer sciences & mathematics as well as its high-tech innovative companies ranging from local start-ups to multinational groups. Grenoble area hosts 25 000 academic and industrial researchers, and more than 60 000 students. Grenoble’s ecosystem is ranked within the top 5 innovative cities in nanotechnologies worldwide and 1st in Europe.Grenoble Quantum Engineering (GreQuE) novel Doctoral Programme will grant 25 PhD projects hosted in Grenoble research institutes in which each student will benefit from a 2 to 6 months placement in a European company.17 SMEs & large groups have in 5 countries committed to offer such placement to our students in accordance with their PhD project.GreQuE DP is expected to:1.Attract excellent candidates from worldwide universities,2. Train top level quantum researchers willing to work at the industrial world to turn quantum technologies in important economic and societal impacts,3.Improve career opportunities at short and long-term scale by immersing the ESRs in the engineering culture,4.Disseminate a comprehensive doctoral programme prototype based on private sector collaboration to other fundamental sciences.
