Individual Fellowships at the Université libre de Bruxelles

IF@ULB is a European postdoctoral programme, COFUNDed by the Université libre de Bruxelles and the European Commission within the framework of MARIE SKŁODOWSKA-CURIE actions (H2020). The programme aimed to recruit 63 international postdoctoral researchers between 2018 and 2024, over three calls. For each call, ULB planned to offer 21 positions in one of the ULB research centres. The positions were open to researchers in all fields, according to a bottom up approach. This comprehensive fellowship programme aimed at providing to excellent Experienced Researchers the opportunity to conduct frontier research and receive broad training in an environment of scientific excellence, under the supervision of renowned academics. At the level of ULB, IF@ULB's goal was to reinforce the international character of the university, strengthen human resources at both national and european level and enhance in-house staff expertise in career development. IF@ULB has been designed to give to the fellows an extensive support to maximize the impact of their research by bringing Research & Innovation (including social innovation) results closer to industrial exploitations and/or societal applications. IF@ULB also aimed at communicating the activities of individual research projects to non-scientific audience and at promoting public engagement.

Project objective

The Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) is a world leading research institution in which a number of scientists have gainedrecognition from international panels, including 4 scientific Nobel Prizes and 23 ERC grants.IF@ULB is a comprehensive fellowship programme providing to experienced researchers the opportunity to conduct frontierresearch and receive diversified training and career guidance in an environment of scientific excellence with state-of-the-art facilities. Under thesupervision of renowned academics, IF@ULB fellows will benefit from an extensive collaboration network with academic andnon-academic institutions and the continuous support of the ULB administration.IF@ULB will propose three calls within a five-year programme. To impact the post-doctoral policy as widely as possible inthe host institution, the project will be open to all fields of research. The recruitment will be organised through three panels:Social Sciences and Humanities, Physical and Engineering Sciences, and Life Sciences. For each call and each panel,IF@ULB will offer to fund 7 experienced researchers for their two-year projects, which amounts to 126 fellowship-yearsduring the action. The proposed selection will be based on the practices implemented in the Marie Skłodowska-CurieIndividual Fellowships and will comprise the following elements: support from a ULB academic staff member, a three-stageevaluation procedure on the basis of three evaluation criteria (excellence, impact, implementation) and a final ranking by thecorresponding thematic panel.Moreover, IF@ULB proposes a comprehensive communication and dissemination plan at programme and project level.IF@ULB’s aim is to reinforce the international character of ULB by building up current experience on international fellowshipprogrammes, to establish its role as a reference in research and training activities in Belgium and Europe, and thereby tostrengthen human resources at both national and European levels.
