A cooperative approach which brings completeness and inclusiveness to the scan-to-BIM modeling process within the historical buildings life cycle.
Quad2BIM's core objectives revolved around rapidly adopting BIM (Building information modeling) for existing architecture. This was achieved through a functional protocol and a collaborative approach, resulting in the creation of precise, as-built parametric models integrated into the Building Lifecycle Management (BLM). The application of BIM for existing architecture faced significant challenges. This was especially critical for preserving the intricacies of historical buildings, which have unique complexities due to their evolutionary nature over centuries. The project also sought to bridge the gap between BIM's use in new constructions and its adaptation for existing buildings. Efficient application of BIM in the construction industry (AEC industry 4.0) was essential for achieving cost savings, heightened productivity, improved operational efficiency, enhanced quality, and superior environmental performance. Quad2BIM protocol incorporated archival data, represented building construction phases, and captured intricate decorations. It promoted Smart Heritage, turning BIM in a functional instrument of knowledge, design and management for historical architecture. Quad2BIM elevated the level of collaboration and maturity for BIM within the domain of heritage architecture. Additionally, the project embraced cutting-edge technologies and tools, positioning its results at the forefront of technological advancements in the field.

Project objective
QUAD2BIM's mission is to promote Smart Heritage turning BIM (Building information modeling) in a functional instrument of knowledge, design and management for historical architecture. It aims to define a new working protocol for building surveyors and BIM technicians, or rather a collaborative approach for issuing as-built parametric models efficiently integrated into the development design process of the existing and historical buildings.So far, the companies that use to carry out the 3D Measured Building Survey also extract the so-called H-BIM (Heritage-BIM) 3Ds as that extremely needs a point cloud based approach and competences. Unluckily, the results often do not give enough consideration to the subsequent steps of the building re-design or reconstruction cycle, which involves architects, engineers and contractors. This issue generates an inevitable re-work onto the models in order to fit them to the users’ needs. The ""information sharing"", which is the pillar of BIM technology for new construction, in this case is inadequate and must be improved in order to reduce inefficiency and save up to 15% of the project budget.The project will face this issue. It will develop and test the new methodology onto some examples of Portuguese Baroque architecture, a complex and differentiated architectural style that needs the integration of different digital techniques to be fully investigated, modeled and managed in BIM environment.""
