Electric Vehicles Point Location Optimisation via Vehicular Communications
The transportation sector is one of the leading contributors to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. According to the European Environmental Agency in 2021, 22% of GHG emissions were contributed by the transportation sector, which is the second-largest source of emissions. To meet the European Union set target of 60% lower emissions from transport by 2050 as compared to 1990, full-spectrum decarbonization is required. The transition towards low-carbon transport, i.e., electric vehicles (EVs) is vital for achieving these ambitious targets. The scope of EV charging management systems is multifaceted and multi-dimensional as it brings together various thematic disciplines including power management in smart grids, control systems, optimization, communication technologies, and data analytics with an underlying common objective to design and develop strategies to boost EV performance, enhance EV driver's QoE, provision optimal energy utilization, and ensure the stability of smart grids. Most of the solutions do not exploit cross-domain monitoring capabilities, which can be implemented courtesy of the rapid proliferation of Internet-of-Things (IoT) technologies. Moreover, the recent advancements in machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) provide a promising pathway to transcend beyond monitoring and state estimation to prediction and proactive optimizations. Lastly, the infrastructure costs for application-layer implementation can be minimized by provisioning charging station recommendation systems as a dedicated application hosted on 5G and beyond cellular infrastructure. EVOLVE’s vision is to realize innovative novel charging point recommendation systems which exploit the above-mentioned technologies. The research and innovation exchange program is based on inter-disciplinary, inter-sectoral, and inter-country mobility to realize the envisioned design goals.

Project objective
Recent developments in the Electric Vehicles (EV) technologies have made great strides to offer new modes of smart green urban mobility, where EVs are used as the main transportation mode replacing the conventional diesel and petrol powered vehicles. EVs are expected to play a key role in achieving ambitious targets of lowering greenhouse emission in the transportation sector. Given the EV penetration rates and future forecasts, it is essential to develop technologies that tackle charging management of EVs considering a holistic view of charging supply/delivery management for EVs, communication of EVs to the smart grid infrastructure system using 5G and beyond systems, smart grids and big data analytics for EVs optimise smart mobility and enhance the quality of experience for EV users. EVOLVE aims to exploit the scientific excellence and expertise of key academic and industrial players into a joint collaborative effort to design, develop and test various technologies that consider the holistic view of EV charging taking into account the view of technical and business stakeholders. EVOLVE will pursue innovation for advancing the technologies in EV charging ecosystem by orchestrating and managing the underlying networking and computational resources, design innovative algorithms using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning ML), developing communication protocols, prediction and optimising load in smart grids, developing software systems and user interfaces (UIs). EVOLVE aims to transcend analytical models and simulation-based validation and aims to deliver five proof-of-concept (PoC) demonstrations. EVOLVE project will provide a platform to foster a close collaboration between academia and industry partners providing each with a unique experience to create new knowledge, share know-how and skills development.
