PhD Research and Innovation in Synchrotron Methods and Applications in Sweden

The PRISMAS programme aims to position Sweden as a leader in synchrotron expertise and promotes interdisciplinary research aligned with sustainability goals. It trains a diverse cohort of X-ray experts across different scientific disciplines, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration to leverage facilities like the MAX IV synchrotron for societal challenges. Objectives: Educating Synchrotron Experts. PRISMAS develops Sweden’s synchrotron expertise through tailored PhD training, including university courses, summer schools, journal clubs, and mandatory secondments at MAX IV. The programme tracks student progress via Career Development Plans (CDPs). So far, five students have started their secondments. Beamline (BL) scientists actively mentor students, co-supervise projects, and contribute to PRISMAS activities. Specialized summer schools provide hands-on beamline training, focusing on key synchrotron techniques and transferable skills. Strengthening Synchrotron Research Networks. PRISMAS fosters collaboration between academia, industry, and international partners. A project call expanded participation to 8 Swedish universities, strengthening the research community. Industry collaborations, such as a water treatment project with Alfa Laval AB, demonstrate practical synchrotron applications. PRISMAS students act as ambassadors, ensuring Sweden’s leadership in synchrotron science. Ongoing monitoring and evaluation ensure the programme’s success in achieving its goals.

Project objective

The PRISMAS initiative is proposed by MAX IV, Lund Universiteit faculty, to meet a two-fold objective: (1) ensure Sweden can take the lead on educating the next generation of synchrotron experts, as the home to the world’s first 4th generation synchrotron, giving Europe significant advances compared to USA and Japan, and (2) strengthen the network surrounding Swedish academia and MAX IV with regard to synchrotron methods for interdisciplinary, intersectoral and international research. The PRISMAS programme ambition is then to educate 40 X-ray scientists, through a completely novel and integrated selection and training process, to tackle some of world most pressing sustainability development goals and to be able to meet the challenges of the future. The targeted impacts are: (1) to develop a new cohort of X-ray methodology ambassadors, able to fully exploit the potential of the next generation X-ray sources, ensuring the future of synchrotron technology and instrumentation is safe in the hands of well-trained and highly knowledgeable people, (2) to deliver to the scientific community novel results generated by a new generation of young scientists trained at the cutting edge of several disciplines, and able to meet some of the most important world challenges, (3) to strengthen the Swedish position in an international competition by continuing to develop X-ray methods, (4) to structure novel training principles for researchers among the PRISMAS stakeholders, and beyond. This ambition is supported by a consortium of 9 Universities (Implementing Partners) and a network of 20 Associated Partners from academia, industry and public bodies, strongly involved and financially committed in the implementation of the programme as well as the training and supervision of PRISMAS fellows. This programme represents a total amount of more than 16 M€ budget which 67% is covered by the consortium, enabling to accelerate the dynamic of ecosystem gathering around MAX IV.
