Morphologically Linked Old Irish Resource

MOLOR: Morphologically Linked Old Irish Resource is a project with the aim of creating an online knowledge base—a graph encoding entities and their relationships—for Old Irish, a language spoken between 600-900 CE. Many digital resources for historical (and generally under-resourced) languages, including Old Irish, are ‘data silos’: while they may be comprehensive and of a high standard, the data (and hence, knowledge) remains scattered and cannot be queried and investigated effectively and efficiently, inhibiting progress in linguistic and philological study in a world which becomes increasingly more technologically-mediated. MOLOR contributes to creating lexicographical standards and interoperability between digital and computational resources for Old Irish, helping scholars to understand this challenging medieval Irish language better—Old Irish presents particularly complex issues given its elaborate inflectional system, manuscript transmission history, and the editorial decisions involved in producing normalised texts. The project goes beyond traditional printed dictionaries and grammars and uses state-of-the art web technologies. More theoretically, the project is interested in word-based grammatical variation in Old Irish, studied by the linguistic subdiscipline of morphology, and investigates how to best represent this variation using a set of canonical forms or lemmas (similar to dictionary headwords in more traditional terms). The main objective in the project is to build such a collection of lemmas—constituting the skeleton of an interlinked digital ecosystem of language resources and the linguistic data that they contain and describe. The impact of the project can be defined along four axes: - Scientific—application of and contribution to standards for historical language lexicography - Educational—better tools for understanding and teaching Old Irish - Technological—usage of Linguistic Linked Data models and standards - Cultural—preservation and accessibility of European linguistic heritage Project website: molor.eu.

Project objective

The aim of MOLORMorphologically Linked Old Irish Resourceis to make Old Irish distributed lexical resources interact by using state-of-the-art data models and lexicographic standards based on the Linguistic Linked Open Data (LLOD) principles. On the basis of the 8th-century Old Irish Wrzburg glosses, MOLOR will fully exploit a set of existing (both textual and lexical) resources by linking the text with a full-form lexicon containing both normalised and variant spellings as well as phonological representations. The integration of resources will benefit many different stakeholders, including lexicographers, philologists, and students, who currently work with inadequate and fragmented resources for a language with a highly complex morphology and an inconsistent and opaque orthography. Thanks to the internationally recognised expertise of the host institution, the applicant will be at the forefront of developments in LLOD and language processing for ancient languages. As a result of the envisaged mutual knowledge transfer, MOLOR is not only expected to lead to a novel standard in resource creation and interlinking for Old Irish, but it will also substantially contribute to and improve language-independent lexicographic data formats and ontologies, as such being applicable to any language and any domain. Finally, the fellowship will significantly improve the applicants skillset and employability due to increased interdisciplinary expertise at the intersection of the Humanities and Technology, and the fostering of new partnerships on resource creation and streamlining for ancient Indo-European languages.
