Project objective

Buildings need glazing that generates electricity without compromising daylight or colour neutrality. Metal-halide perovskites—thanks to tunable band gaps and excellent optoelectronic properties—are strong candidates for power-generating windows with high visible transmittance (AVT ≥ 80%). In particular, chloride-rich perovskites (Eg ≈ 3.0 eV) can harvest UV while transmitting visible light, yet current devices remain small-area (~1% PCE) and hard to scale. SHINE tackles the key bottlenecks—crystallisation control and interfacial charge transfer—by (i) establishing blade/slot-die processes that deliver highly uniform Cl-perovskite films with AVT ≥ 80% on 10×10 cm2 substrates, (ii) engineering deep-HOMO, low-absorption hole-transport layers with targeted passivation to minimise voltage losses, and (iii) demonstrating series-connected 100 cm² semi-transparent modules with PCE ≥ 2.2%, Voc ≥ 1.85 V, AVT ≥ 80%, and ISOS-L2 durability. Mechanistic insight will be obtained through in-depth characterization, including XRD for crystallographic analysis; SEM and AFM for surface and morphological mapping; PLQY and TRPL for probing recombination dynamics; and KPFM together with UPS for energy-level and work-function mapping—complemented by FTIR and ssNMR to elucidate chloride-related defect chemistry. Leveraging the host’s upscaling capability and the fellow’s expertise in Cl-based wide-bandgap perovskites, the project will deliver validated modules, open recipes/datasets/scripts, and clear exploitation routes for BIPV. In parallel, the fellow will gain advanced technical training, leadership and project-management experience, and exposure to the host’s extensive European industrial and academic network—substantially enriching their career trajectory and positioning them as a future leader in the field of renewable energy.
