SCIENCE4FUTURE · Science Summer in the Kiel Region in 2026/27

Project objective

In 2026/27, the European Researchers’ Night will return with its 10th and 11th full edition to the Kiel region as SCIENCE4FUTURE, a truly European Science Summer of research, curiosity and creativity. The project will transform Northern Germany into one of Europe’s liveliest science hubs as it will be fully integrated in 2026 into the EU’s brand new Science Comes to Town (SCTT) initiative, which is co-hosted between Kiel, Brest and Split. Over two years, SCIENCE4FUTURE will invite citizens, pupils, educators and tourists to discover how research shapes everyday life – on issues such as health, cultural heritage, talents and sea – through hands-on experiments, exhibitions, films, debates, and art.A rich series of monthly pre-events across Kiel, Rendsburg, Eckernförde, Plön, Preetz and Laboe will lead up to the Science Days in late September 2026 and 2027, when laboratories, universities, research vessels, cinemas and shopping malls open their doors to more than 15,000 visitors. Our Researchers at Schools programme will be rolled out for the first time across the entire federal state of Schleswig-Holstein with formats such as Rent-a-Scientist, Rent-a-Science-Film and Children University, thus inspiring more than 17,000 children to pursue research careers. Researchers themselves will benefit from professional communication training and new opportunities to engage with policy-makers, businesses and citizens.Supported by almost 50 partners from research, education, culture, media and industry, including our eight partner universities from the SEA-EU University Alliance, SCIENCE4FUTURE will strengthen trust in science, promote inclusiveness, and highlight the tangible benefits of EU-funded research for society. With its European partnerships, cross-regional outreach and year-long visibility, SCIENCE4FUTURE will stand as the largest science-communication and education event in Northern Germany - and a flagship example of how science truly shapes our future.
