WINES · Sustainable and Resilient Wine Ecosystems: Adaptation, Market Innovation, and Social Inclusion

Project objective

The wine sector is undergoing profound transformation, facing multiple and interlinked challenges such as climate change, evolving consumer preferences, global competition, and shifting policy frameworks. These dynamics put at risk the sector’s fundamental role in sustaining rural livelihoods, preserving cultural heritage, and supporting employment in Europe and worldwide. Despite extensive research, there remain critical gaps in understanding how innovation, sustainability, and social diversity can be combined into viable adaptation strategies. WINES addresses these gaps by rethinking the wine value chain through a comprehensive, interdisciplinary and comparative perspective that bridges Old and New World wine regions, highlighting both shared challenges and distinctive regional differences. To achieve its objectives, WINES mobilizes a large international network of academic and non-academic partners. Through a structured programme of secondments and staff exchanges, 81 researchers from 19 institution in Europe (France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland - Old World) and 5 from overseas (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, South Africa - New World) will work alongside 21 industry and societal actors. This collaborative setting ensures effective knowledge transfer, cross-disciplinary learning, and the joint development of innovative solutions. WINES is rethinking the wine value chain through a multifaceted lens, integrating climate adaptation, consumer trends, and cross cutting dimensions to cope, such as sustainable tourism, global trade, and diversity and gender equality identifying economic viable strategies and promoting sustainable practices. By combining scientific excellence with real-world engagement, WINES will deliver results that benefit wine producers, policymakers, and citizens. Ultimately, the project will foster resilience, competitiveness, and inclusiveness in one of the world’s most emblematic agri-food sectors.
