Project objective

The preservation of architectural heritage, encompassing a wide range of disciplines and approaches, lacks universal principles, even among Western cultures. Applied to this discipline, architectural visualisation enables the examination of diverging approaches without compromising the architectural integrity of historic structures through digital models that convey a wealth of information, data, and values to a broad audience.The objective of this proposed research is to advance and merge the innovative use of visualisation and augmented reality models with architectural conservation to increase historical knowledge of modern heritage, delving into shifting conservation methodologies and technical information on material decay or replacement.Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s (1886-1969) 20th-century built heritage, located in various countries across Europe and the United States, will prove to be a fitting case study to display diverging transatlantic preservation methodologies. Through the investigation over time of a selection of works designed by Mies, this research will explore significant social, political, gender, and cultural aspects involved in the discipline of preservation in different contexts.The research aims to improve decision-making processes for professionals and policymakers in the field of heritage protection. The results of this research will also enhance accessibility to historical information, archival documents, and material data, managed through interactive models. The investigation of competing preservation strategies will display different forms of community engagement. Technological and digital tools will improve technical proficiency in conservation and foster mutual dialogue among transatlantic cultures, thereby supporting the universal objective of accurately transmitting modern built heritage to future generations.
