Project objective
Belonging to the Trypanosomatida, Trypanosoma brucei, Trypanosoma cruzi and Leishmania, the ‘tritryps’ – remain a pervasive public health threat in Africa, the Americas and Eurasia. Moreover, Leishmaniases and Chagas disease (caused by T. cruzi) are emerging infectious diseases in Europe and the USA, causing significant and increasing public health challenges in the countries affected. New and improved therapeutics and diagnostics are critical to combatting these diseases but rely on new antigens, drug targets and biomarkers being uncovered through basic research. Our aim is to establish a network that will train the next generation of researchers to develop cutting edge tools to better understand Parasite Adaptive skills and how Counter Them (PACT), through a detailed understanding of new, shared aspects of fundamental trypanosomatid biology, targeted drug screening and diagnostic development. PACT researchers will integrate into a multidisciplinary research consortium whose partners have already established academic research portfolios, with projects embedded in endemic countries, and ongoing collaborations with industrial partners. The PACT doctoral network will provide a unique research infrastructure to train 11 researchers driven to improve human health and well-being by developing the expertise to uncover and then exploit new findings in trypanosomatid biology.
