Project objective
The Docgreen project brings together the research and educational expertise of six European Universities in Green and Sustainable Chemistry with a support of an enterprise to promote the use of green methodologies in biopolymer synthesis and recycling, as well as in sustainable design. This multidisciplinary program, integrating fields such as organic and polymer chemistry, materials science, and photocatalysis, aims to green the entire modern plastics value chain. It provides doctoral students with an engaging experience, including hands-on training in diverse green techniques, knowledge integration across disciplines, and comprehensive theoretical programs offered by the institutions. Key research areas include the greener synthesis of C5-C6 bio-based building blocks, exploration of sustainable reaction conditions— such as catalytic methods and eutectic solvents—to create new classes of polymers based on furanics, cyclodextrins and dextrins, or their combinations. The project also investigates various recycling techniques for both synthetic and bio-polymers, as well as studying new materials' functional properties and applications while assessing their sustainability. With its extensive thematic scope, the program benefits seven doctoral candidates by exposing them to diverse academic and non academic environments, fostering mobility, and ensuring sound educational and career development through EdTech tools. This approach supports the sustainability of expertise both at the human and institutional levels, advancing knowledge and innovation that will ultimately benefit society and stakeholders, and reinforcing Docgreen’s impact within the EU and globally.
