Project objective

All organisms, including humans, vary widely in their sensitivity to environmental stimuli. In humans, about 20-30% of the population is highly sensitive to environmental stimuli. While this trait offers adaptive flexibility, it also increases vulnerability to overstimulation and stress-related disorders. Despite growing public interest, high sensitivity remains poorly understood and under recognized by (health)care professionals and employers. Consequently, opportunities to reduce stress, increase inclusiveness and prevent work dropout in society are missed. DESTINIES aims to advance the mechanistic understanding of environmental sensitivity at neural, behavioural and cognitive level, while also training a next generation of Doctoral Candidates equipped with skills to lead this emerging field. This mechanistic understanding will not only promote wide acceptance of the trait but will also foster the development of stress-reducing interventions specifically tailored to highly sensitive individuals. We hypothesize that high sensitivity is associated with delayed but prolonged sensitive periods in development, resulting in unique information processing patterns that render individuals more susceptible to both negative and positive experiences in life. This innovative hypothesis will be tested by the Doctoral Candidates through interdisciplinary training, from advanced neuroscience to cutting-edge neuropsychological research. Our Doctoral Candidates will have intensive interactions with both academic and industrial partners across European countries and receive joint doctorates under the guidance of multiple supervisors, ensuring high-quality training. Through close collaboration with highly sensitive person foundations, DESTINIES will ensure that scientific insights and interventions will reach broader society. In summary, graduates will be well prepared to excel in innovation-driven international, interdisciplinary and intersectional collaborations.
