Project objective

Modern lifestyles disrupt physiological rhythms, contributing to a surge in noncommunicable chronic diseases, yet circadian clock (~24h) driven rhythms and their roles remain poorly understood. The ChronoBridge training network aims to accelerate recognition of the 'time variable' as pivotal for understanding metabolic rhythms in health and disease. Bridging disciplines such as chronobiology, bioinformatics, multi-omics analyses, and physiology, the primary goals of the ChronoBridge training network's are to extend the research base of chronometabolism, establish a sustainable EU network for disseminating chronobiology principles, and advance chronomedicine. Twelve Doctoral Candidates (DCs) will benefit from interdisciplinary career development, leveraging expertise from 18 partners (14 academic, 3 industrial, 1 clinical) and one patient association. The DC projects aim to fill knowledge gaps by investigating metabolic synchronization mechanisms in different organs, understanding their impact in healthy and diseased states, and advancing the preclinical development of chronomedicine. The DC projects will investigate metabolic diseases like type 2 diabetes and obesity using patient-derived cell models from liver, skeletal muscles and adipose tissues; organoids and induced pluripotent stem cells, representing both healthy and disease states; innovative genetically modified mouse models of clock mutants; diet and drug treatments in preclinical models and in humans, and interventions in human liver donors ex vivo. The completion of the ChronoBridge training objectives will enable specialists to incorporate the 'time' dimension into biomedical research, integrate chronobiological expertise into translational projects, and disseminate circadian interventions for health and diseases to broad audiences. ChronoBridge aspires to promote European leadership in chronobiology and chronomedicine, influencing the medical community, patients, the public, and policymakers.
