Project objective
Anchored by key levers such as international, interdisciplinary and intersectoral (triple-I) mobility and training, the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) transformed and reshaped research careers in Europe over the past 30 years resulting in sustained structural impact in researcher recruitment, supervision, and career development. However, despite Europe having world‑class research infrastructure and strong scientific traditions within its institutions, there remains an urgent need to confront the vulnerabilities in researcher careers as this undermines Europe’s competitiveness on the global stage.Issues such as bureaucracy in mobility, and lack of researcher-centric training and career development policies hinder longer-term researcher career resilience and security. Furthermore, new challenges arising from geopolitical uncertainty such as threats to scientific freedom, research security, and barriers to mobility, can hinder Europe’s attractiveness to global research talent. Under the presidency of the EU Council, Ireland will host the annual MSCA Presidency Conference on 4/5 November 2026 in Dublin. The overarching policy aim of the conference is to provide actionable policy-relevant insights and recommendations to strengthen resilient research careers, promoting long-term and diverse career pathways, and the ability of researchers to withstand external shocks. In addition, the conference will celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the MSCA showcasing the programme's impact on research careers and researcher policy in Europe, and exploring how the MSCA can evolve to support resilient, attractive, and future-proof research careers amid growing global uncertainty.The conference is organised by Research Ireland - Taighde Éireann, in collaboration with the Irish Government's Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science.
