Project objective

TOGAS is a novel postdoctoral talent attraction programme leveraging academic sustainability for researchers. It offers five 60-month fellowships (36+24 months) at UAntwerpen with excellent working conditions, comprehensive training in research, teaching and academic skills and a vision to long-term employment within academia. TOGAS is centered around ‘sustainability’ as overarching cross-disciplinary research orientation, addressing sustainability challenges in a set of scientific STEM disciplines ranging from chemistry to circular product design and (interior)architecture and extending to medical biochemistry. The TOGAS selection and recruitment processes ensure Open, Transparent, and Merit-based Recruitment aligned with MSCA’s standards and the European Charter for Researchers. The interdisciplinary coverage and intersectoral relevance to provide sustainable future-oriented solutions is expected to add to the attractiveness for candidates both in and outside Europe. Overall, the programme holds two-fold objectives, with a clear win for both the host institution and the postdoctoral researchers. First, it aims to support the academic career development of postdoctoral researchers by leveraging excellent research and academic training opportunities to prepare for an independent academic career. Secondly, it aims to attract and retain academic talent in STEM domains connected to the university’s research agenda on sustainability by providing a potential stairway to long-term academic career opportunities beyond the fellowship. TOGAS will contribute to career stability by introducing a pre-tenure track model in UAntwerpen, piloting the development of an all-round academic profile for postdoctoral researchers aligned to the prospect of progression to a permanent academic role, while also promoting UAntwerpen as an attractive pioneering ‘Choose Europe for Science’ destination university.
