Project objective

The MultiMAM project aims to accelerate the industrial adoption of Multimaterial Additive Manufacturing (MMAM) by addressing major scientific and technical challenges, including material incompatibility, weak interfacial strength, microstructural uncertainty, limited scalability, and sustainability concerns. MultiMAM adopts a holistic multidisciplinary approach that links cutting-edge science with industrial applications. The consortium integrates 15 pioneering PhD projects across the MMAM value chain: Materials, Processes, and Sustainability, under an international, intersectoral, and diversity-driven supervision model. The project will explore a broad spectrum of material combinations, prioritising bio-based and recycled resources in line with the European Green Deal. It will develop MMAM technologies based on Tomographic Printing, Laser Powder Bed Fusion, Sheet-based AM, Extrusion-based AM, Stereolithography, Digital Light Processing, Directed Energy Deposition, Binder Jetting, and hybrid Injection Moulding–AM approaches. These developments will result in industrial demonstrators that set new benchmarks for precision, scalability, and circularity, supported by predictive modelling, design methodologies, and standardised testing protocols. Ultimately, MultiMAM seeks to close existing knowledge gaps in MMAM, establish industrial guidelines and standards for positioning the EU industries as global leaders in eco-conscious digital manufacturing. Central to MultiMAM is the training of 15 Doctoral Candidates as leaders in MMAM, equipping them with practical experience in both industry and academia to meet sector-specific needs across the EU. To achieve its training and innovation objectives, the MultiMAM consortium combines essential intellectual and infrastructural strengths from 10 EU countries, committed to uphold diversity, open science, and a workplace-safety culture.
