Project objective
The overarching objective of the MINARET Doctoral Network (DN) programme is to contribute to global and national efforts to understand and address the challenges of promoting democratization and good governance by training the next generation of scholars equipped to explore the interconnections between law, religion, and governance in post-imperial Muslim-majority societies. The MINARET DN is built around three interconnected goals: 1) To collect original empirical data and generate new theoretical and empirical insights into the mutually transformative interactions between law, religion, and governance in post-imperial Islamic societies. The empirical findings will enable us to engage with and advance theoretical debates in law, development and governance studies, Islamic studies, comparative political regimes, and decolonial studies. 2) To create, develop, and enhance the sustainability of doctoral training programmes focused on the study of post-imperial Islamic legal cultures. The proposed programme will integrate a variety of disciplines, sectors, fields, and geographical regions. 3) To engage with and contribute to the global democratization and good governance agenda by translating research findings into policy-relevant outputs, including workshops, conferences, peer-reviewed publications, and policy papers. The in-depth findings of the PhD projects will provide strategic intelligence and policy insights for international organizations, development agencies, decision-makers, researchers, and practitioners—both within and beyond the EU—on ways to promote democratization and good governance in post-imperial Muslim-majority societies. These goals will be achieved through the design and implementation of an interdisciplinary and multisectoral DN programme on the sociology of post-imperial Islamic legal cultures, involving 15 doctoral candidates, each pursuing a PhD at one of the 11 leading European universities that form part of the MINARET consortium.
