Project objective

ReCoTA aims to establish an interdisciplinary training network on the emerging topic of smart colloidal materials for therapeutic applications. Over the past decades, major efforts have advanced the development of colloids (i.e., micro and nanoparticles) for drug delivery. Yet, while these systems have demonstrated improved pharmacokinetics, they mainly act as passive, individually operating carriers that release their payload by simple diffusion or unspecific matrix degradation. There is a clear need for strategies that achieve selective therapeutic action at the target site. ReCoTA will take the next step by designing colloids via molecular and nanomaterials engineering, to obtain programmable assemblies capable of reading environmental cues and translating them into localized therapeutic delivery. The consortium includes top-tier academics (including several ERC AdG/CoG/StG/EIC grantees) and 9 companies with synergistic expertise in the areas of materials engineering, synthetic chemistry, drug development and manufacturing scale-up. 15 Doctoral Candidates (DCs) will be trained in molecular building-block design, fabrication/functionalization of micro-/nano-assemblies, and rigorous biological evaluation. The training program – covering scientific and non-academic aspects – will prepare DCs for careers across academia and industry. Altogether, ReCoTA will install European leadership in next-generation colloids aligned with health-innovation priorities.
