Project objective

The Green Deal's vision is to make the EU the first climate-neutral region by 2050. Key objectives include restoring nature, reducinggreenhouse gas emissions, and promoting sustainable farming practices. The wine sector, comprising numerous small to mediumsized producers, is the EU's largest agricultural exporter and significantly influences regional landscapes, communities, andeconomies.Sustain Vitis aspires to act as a catalyst for sustainable viticulture and winemaking practices, addressing environmental, economic,and social dimensions aligning with the Farm-to-Fork Strategy.This international, interdisciplinary and intersectoral training &research network aims to equip 15 Doctoral Candidates with holistic expertise along the whole wine value chain, enabling them tosupport traditional methods with groundbreaking technologies and translate knowledge from science into industrial applications.The program will offer world-class training in innovative fields, including grapevine advanced crossbreeding and gene editing,precision viticulture and agroecology, sulphites/alcohol free winemaking and alternative packaging, and addressing the boost ofclimate resilience, decrease of pesticides, preservation of biodiversity and soil fertility, as well as reduction of carbon footprint.By integrating hands-on training, secondments, and transferable skills courses the program will develop professionals adept in bothacademic and industrial roles, to advance sustainable viticulture, foster resilience in the face of climate change, boost Europe’scompetitiveness, and contribute to a healthier society.The intersectoral, synergistic consortium comprises 5 universities, 3 researchcenters, and 11 companies from 6 European Countries, all recognized for excellence in their fields. This collaboration will bolster theirresearch and innovation (R&I), training, communications, and networking capacity, fostering an intersectoral learning communityworking towards a greener future
