Project objective
The incidence of climate extreme events in Europe is anticipated to escalate in the future. The frequency and intensity of these is on the rise and has the potential to deeply disrupt civil systems, bringing significant harm to the EU communities.The transportation systems in particular are critical to our economies and are among the most vulnerable to suffer disruptions from extreme events. Societies depend on these to function, and in response to disasters these are the lifelines for communities. The future projections for these systems are highly uncertain, and stakeholders of transport are currently faced with the complex challenge of deciding for uncertain futures, with uncertain hazards & impacts.To address this the OCTOPUS project will deliver technologies and frameworks to create resilient transportation systems to deeply uncertain futures. It will revolutionize the training of doctorates in Europe by integrating “silos” of resilience research as part of an integrated “big picture”. Doctorates in OCTOPUS will be trained to I) Better understand the risks that transport will be confronted with in the future; II) Develop pathways to cope with uncertainty; and III) Deploy empirical innovative solutions to build resilience in a flexible form. An international consortium will deliver through high-quality international-intersectoral-interdisciplinary training the next generation specialists that will change the paradigm of transportation resilience, capable of addressing deeply uncertain climate futures for the sector.
