Developing an instrument for the measurement and study of neighbourhood attachment and the sense of community in European cities

Project objective

This research project aims to develop an instrument that can comprehensively measure neighbourhood attachment and sense of community in European cities in different urban situations and different cultural contexts. This will provide a useful tool for all those striving to improve the quality of life and enhance social cohesion in urban areas. Using the methodology of scale development and cross-cultural research, the instrument - a questionnaire - will measure the individuals' subjective feelings about their neighbourhood as a physical space; the residents' social involvement in neighbourhood life; the social and economic commitments that individuals have to their neighbourhood; and the sense of community that exists within the neighbourhood. The instrument will be tested in ten carefully selected neighbourhoods in the United Kingdom and Greece. Following statistical analysis, the findings and implications of the research will be disseminated to a wide audience of academics, practitioners and policy-makers.
