Project objective
Fully Implicit Navier-Stokes Simulations and their Implementation on Parallel Computers with Relevance to Aerospace C. Weber The purpose of this study is the development of an implicit multi-block solver for turbulent flows around aircraft. The method relies on the LU-SGS iterative technique. This technique will be extended to the full three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations. Of special interest is the treatment of the viscous terms and the boundary conditions. To obtain high parallel efficiency, even for a high number of processors, special care has to be taken for the coupling between blocks. The implicit method will be augmented with a coarse grid correction scheme, or two-level multigrid algorithm The implicit implementation of turbulence models will be investigated. The method will be applied to the simulation of a subsonic flow over an airfoil, to a transonic flow over a Airbus A340 wing, and finally to a flow over a complete aircraft configuraton. In all cases, the computational costs and convergence rates of the explicit and implicit calculations will be compared. Parallel efficiency will be demonstrated on massively parallel computers.
