Project objective
The aim of the project is to further understanding of clinical disorders of ovulation by investigation of the endocrine and molecular processes associated with the critical intercycle FSH rise. This rise in FSH concentration initiates ovulation and is regulated by endocrine factors including gonadal steroids and inhibins which act on gonadotrophin secretion through local processes including expression of activins and control of the synthesis, storage and secretion of both FSH and LH. This project will apply recent developments in inhibin assay methodology to a series of clinical endocrine studies investigating the relative role of inhibin and sex steroids in the control of the FSH rise. Molecular work will be carried out in parallel to investigate the paracrine control of the synthesis, storage and secretion of the gonadotrophin subunits in the primate pituitary gland at different stages of the cycle, particularly during the time of the FSH rise at the luteal-follicular transition.
