The management of transport infrastructure in metropolitan areas a historical approach

Project objective

The project will operate in the framework of a research programme on European urbanisation in the modern and contemporary period (EUROCIT), financed under the Human Capital and Mobility Programme (ERB4050PL921589). The aim of the applicant's project is a comparative and interdisciplinary study of the role of public policy in urban transportation during the 20th century. The historical approach will permit to evaluate the impact of different policies in three phases of the evolution of transport in five EU capital cities (London, Amsterdam-Randstad, Berlin, Madrid and Lisbon): diffusion of public transport networks from the beginning of the century till the 1930; private and mass motorisation of the 1950s and 1960s; new policies started in the late 1970s and 1980s. The project is closely connected with the concerns of the EUROCIT programme coordinated by Professor Peter Clark. It will enable a comparative study on a European scale covering data from most EU countries including less advantaged ones. The research outputs will be disseminated on a European-wide scale both within EUROCIT network and throughout the EU through papers and publications and the participation in colloquia and conferences.
