Project objective

Plasma nitriding is an environmentally harmless surface engineering technology which is being rapidly accepted by the European manufacturing industry. During plasma nitriding a residual macro stress profile develops and important design parameters like load bearing capacity and fatigue strength are sensitive to residual stresses. The objective of this project is to develop, in cooperation with the surface engineering group of the University of Birmingham, a quantitative model for the residual stress profiles arising from the plasma nitriding process. During the plasma nitriding process there are two unknown parameters, stress relaxation and the redistribution of carbon. The present project will involve the measurement of the kinetics of these parameters together with accompanying microstructure analysis. Carbon redistribution will be measured for a set of nitriding parameters and the influence on hardness on a 'fine scale' will be measured using nano-indentation techniques. These data will be correlated with experimental residual stress profiles and will be mathematically modelled using a variety of numerical techniques.
