Project objective
The objectives of this project are to research the physics and to develop some applications of advanced semiconductor optical emitters. Physics research will emphasise improving fundamental understanding of underlying mechanisms and processes. The proposed emitters and studies include: - High speed lasers; what is the limit? - Self-pulsing lasers; what is the mechanism? - Micro-cavity devices; what is the cavity process? - ll-Vl devices; material and operating issues New applications research will use devices already developed or under development such as: - DFB lasers; developed for telecommunications but now being applied to gas detection - Self-pulsing lasers; developed for CD memory but now useful for optical synchronisation - Vertical cavity semiconductor lasers; currently being developed for optical interconnection - Short wavelength ll-Vl lasers; being developed for optical memory but with potential to be applied to displays, vision or sensing - Laser-like LEDs; possible application to displays, sensing, and telecommunications
