Geographic polarization and economic growth

Project objective

The union between the 'new growth theory' and the 'new economic geography' is very promising. The two main perspectives are: - Why and how the economic organisation of space is affecting the growth process and how growth is changing the geographic structure of activities. - From an institutional viewpoint, the issue is to appreciate more accurately the impact of the (geographic) organisation of the decision making process on growth. Three different papers have been realised. Two of them deal mainly with the impact of different institutional regimes on the dynamics of urban systems. The third one explores the implications of the assumption of productive local public goods (infrastructure) within the theory of local public economics. The first issue of my future research agenda deals with the spatial propagation of innovations and information. Very little is known on how to enhance integration by favoring the propagation of spill-overs and to what extent it is desirable The practical applications of this are of interest for the definition of national and European industrial policies. The second topic is related to the the impact of the geographic organisation on the acquisition of human capital.
