Project objective
In the last few years a large amount of work has focused on the role of cell signalling in the assignation of cell fates. However, the switches and events that lead cells to differentiate have remained relatively unexplored. The present proposal deals with the role that a central signalling pathway, the ras pathway, plays in cell differentiation. I plan to study this in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster by focusing on one decision: the commitment of particular cells to differentiate as sensory organs of the peripheral nervous system, and the role of one particular class of enzymes: the MAPkinases, in this event. This will allow me to use the powerful Genetics characteristic of the fruit fly and combine this with my more biochemical background, to make up a multidisciplinary approach to this problem.
