The role of symmetries in string theory

Project objective

String theories are to date the best candidate to unify all known force into one single model. It is believed that there is a single consistent theory with a huge symmetry, which is not completely known yet. The symmetry obtaining most interest at the moment is duality. An aspec of duality is that it relates physics at large and small scales. This means that one can learn about microscopic theories by studying string inspired cosmology, and vice versa. Proposed is to study the effect of these symmetries by looking at the abovementioned contrary subjects, as to get a deeper insight into their physical meaning and their connection with the standard model. The duration of the proposed project is estimated to be three years and will hopefully end in a PhD. degree.
