Project objective

A neurophysiological investigation will be carried out on the mechanisms of the induction of long-term depression (LTD) and depotentiation (DP) of glutamatergic excitatory synaptic transmission in the rat hippocampus. The research will concentrate on investigating the role of Ca in the induction of LTD/DP, including the role of the influx of Ca via NMDA receptors and voltage-gated Ca stores in releasing Ca or acting as a sink for Ca during the induction of LTD/DP. The stores that will be mainly investigated are those of the endoplasmic reticulum, and in particular, those which are ryanodine-sensitive and inositol 1,4,5-triphosphate-sensitive. The role of each store will be investigated by measuring the induction of LTD/DP in the presence of selective agents which bind to ryanodine or IP3 receptors and either induce or block release of Ca from the stores.
