Project objective

The basic acoustic echo cancellation scheme models the echo path with an adaptive filter. A linear FIR filter trained by ( a variant of ) LMS is the most popular choice for the implementation of an acoustic echo canceller. However, the large number of parameters to be updated may make the real time implementation of even this low-complexity scheme prohibitively slow. The aim of this project is the application of efficient, inherently stable, lattice-based adaptive IIR algorithms in the acoustic echo cancellation context and the investigation of their properties in under-modeled cases. The update of a modest number of parameters, combined with the inherent stability of the normalized lattice filter, leads to reduced complexity and facilitates real-time implementation of these algorithms. Furthermore, the modular structure of the normalized lattice filter is perfectly suited to VLSI CORDIC implementation, leading to high processing rates and reliable numerical properties. The investigation of the behaviour of these algorithms in undermodeled cases is very important from a System Identification point of view, since it will provide a priori bounds on their performance.
