Project objective
There is great interest in a new class of organometallic compounds, tho in which one or more metals are part of the Pi-system of a linear conjugated carbon chain Cn. The interest is due principally to the fact that they may present new material properties, as liquid crystals or as non linear opticals. Complexes 1 and 2 have been prepared in Prof. Werner's Group: (drawing 1 and 2) 1 and 2 are excellent building blocks for the preparation of new rhodium complexes in which the metal is bonded to two different Cn chains, taking part of a highly delocalized Pi-system. The objective of the research work will be the preparation of: a) Mononuclear complexes, linking 1 or 2 to a C_C-C_CPh unit. b) Di- and trinuclear complexes, linking 1 or 2 to other metallic centers by C_C- C_C chains. c) Di- and trinuclear complexes containing ligands with very different electronic properties at the two ends of the molecule; these compounds may exhibit non-linear optical properties. Compounds having this optical properties are of great interest because of the potential applications in the new materials industry.
