Project objective
All coating operations are limited by the onset of air entrainment which causes fine bubbles to be retained on coated products. This limitation is very costly to industry (e.g. photographic films, computer audio, video tapes, medical films and surgical gloves, etc..) and forces very low production of high quality products. The purpose of this programme of research is to undertake a comprehensive experimental study of this phenomenon in typical coating operations (dip coating, metering coating, die and slot coating, gravure coating) under a range of operating conditions (viscosities, surface tension of liquid, surface roughness and charge of substrates, and speed of operation) using advanced visualisation techniques. The experimental work gathered will form a basis to assess and improve available theories as well as provide much needed technological understanding.
