Project objective

Light-harvesting is a key process in photosynthetic conversion of solar energy. Recently the 3-D structure of a bacterial light-harvesting complex has become available. Excitations are transferred within this ring-shaped complex in less then a picosecond, followed by transfer to the next ring, and delivery to a reaction centre. Genetic engineering (with Prof. Hunter in Sheffield, UK) provides control over its functional properties. In this project we relate the energy transfer function of this membrane pigment-protein to its structure and spectroscopy. We will: (1) compare the measured spectral properties with those that can be calculated on the basis of the structure and to obtain estimates for interpigment couplings, energetic disorder and exciton delocalisation, (2) measure the intra-ring energy transfer by the decay of the emission depolarisation, (3) measure the electronic coherence by 2-pulse photon echo and compare the timescale with that of energy transfer, (4) measure the interring transfer by exciton annihilation.
