Project objective
We study the thermodynamics and kinetics of wetting at grain boundaries metallic materials, and its consequences of on structural evolution and mechanical properties. The thermodynamics is controlled by the position of the wetting temperature with respect to the phase diagram. The kinetics is related to mass transport either by diffusion or by liquid flow. The consequences of the existence of a liquid film at the grain boundaries are both on the structural evolution (abnormal grain growth as well as on the mechanical properties (enhanced grain boundary sliding). We will study both experimentally and theoretically these different aspects in various metallic systems (Al-Sn, Al-Ga, Al-Pb, Al-Sn-Pb, Mo-Ni). The experimental approach will consist in optical metallography, SEM, study by X-ray diffractometry of grain boundarie's mobility, TEM, In siu TEM and mechanical testing associated with fracture analysis. The theoretical approach relies both on classical analytical work, and on the use of computer simulations at the mesos- copic scale.
