Project objective

The main objective of the title project is the development and applicat of an improved variant of the Photofragment Ion Imaging Technique. This technique was developed by Chandler, Houston and co-workers and revealed great potential when they applied it to studies of primary photochemistry of a range of gas phase molecules relevant in hte atmospheres of Earth and /or the outer planets. Once the experimental technique has been set up in the laboratory, a variety range of systems will be studied, some of particular attention will include : - Hydride molecules, e. g. water, hydrogen sulphide, methane, ethane, with special emphasis on the litle studied molecular hydrogen elimination channels that are known to operate following photo- excitation at wavelengths in the vacuum ultraviolet. - Carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide, focusing on the electronic branchin in the atomic oxygen product, the energy and angular momentum disposal in the partner molecular fragment. - Chlorine dioxide and chlorine nitrate, with a principal interest in establishing the relative yield of atomic chlorine photoproducts versus chlorine monoxide radical production, and its variation with excitation wavelength. Such information is necessary for accurate assessment of the ozone depleting potential of these two chlorine containing precursors.
