The development of a virtual reality interface for a scanning probe microscope

Project objective

The objectives of the project are the visualisation of (and interaction with) scientific data by means of immersion in a virtual reality (VR) environment, and the control of scientific instrumentation through this environment. This novel approach will allow real-time instrument control, apprehension of multidimensional data sets, and modification of experimental strategy. The project would be based at the Joule Laboratory of the Univ.Salford and there will be a close collaboration with the UK National Centre for Virtual Environments, located on the same campus. The Centre is highly regarded in the rapidly growing field of VR and the training aspect of the programme would be considerable. The objectives of the project will be realised in the important new area of Scanning Probe Microscopy (including AFM). The combination of SPM with VR is an especially amenable one (see accompanying project description), and will help keep Europe at the forefront in both areas.
