Project objective

SUBJECT Our intention is to study theoretically the microscopic properties of semiconductor microlaser structures. The research will be done in the theory division of the semiconductor group, lead by Professor Stephan W. Koch (Fachbreich Physik, Philipps University, Marburg, Germany). MOTIVATION The microlasers offer improved performance compared to the conventional semiconductor laser. They offer many potential innovations for the telecommunication industry. However, the theoretical behaviour of the microlasers is still unknown. The combined knowledge of the applicant and the host institution provide an excellent starting point for the theoretical investigations. WORK PROGRAMME The project is planned to last for two years due to its demanding nature. We plan to proceed in three stages: we study microlasers 1) with bulk semiconductor as active material (first six months) 2) with quantum well heterostructures in active material (next six months) 3) and their quantum properties according to models developed (last one year).
