Project objective

In the last year, the strong coupling behaviour of many supersymmetric string theories has been determined. This is very important because for the first time there are concrete indications on how superstring theory should be formulated beyond perturbation theory. However, there are several problems which need to be solved, and this is the aim of this project. In particular, superstring theories contain an infinite tower of stable (BPS) states in the perturbative spectrum, and they must exist nonperturbatively as solitons in the dual theories. Understanding the general class of exact solutions of low-energy supergravity corresponding to these states will have important implications for string dualities and, in addition, it will clarify the statistical origin of the entropy of supersymmetric black holes. The second objective of the project is to investigate the relation of string theory to eleven dimensions. This project is expected to provide results of high relevance for revealing the non-perturbative aspects of superstring dynamics.
