Project objective

The main purpose of the project will be the incorporation of the dynamic crack model in the earthquake source inversion problems, for the determination of the fault displacements in the earth, after a strong seismic event. The dynamic approach is more general than the kinematic one, since the displacement discontinuity history on the fault is effected via the solution of the dynamic fracture problem. A double integral equation representation in the time and space domains, between the displacements any where in a homogeneous isotropic medium and the displacement discontinuity across the surface of the fault, will be set up. A constant temporal stress drop across the fault will be employed. By discretisation and by applying optimisation and regularisation techniques, we should obtain the spatial and temporal slip distribution across the fault. Friction between the edges of the fault, together with crack arrest and propagation criteria, will be incorporated in the solution. Comparisons with already existing results regarding simple planar cracks, will be made.
