Project objective
Implants placed within the body are of great clinical and social use in today's society. Initial protein adsorption to the surface of such implants critically influences integration of the implant and while being strongly dependent on surface properties, is not well understood. A detailed look at the interactions between nanofabricated surfaces and protein molecules is a key step towards better implant surfaces. The aim of the project is to isolate the interaction of individual protein molecules with surface features below lOnm in size, by using state-of-the-art nanofabricative techniques. The conformation and functionality of such proteins will be probed and the systematic variation of feature size and chemistry will be used to seek a relation between specific surface properties and protein adsorption characteristics. These biological model studies are likely to suggest new preparation methods involving biomolecules to obtain tailor-made, functional implant surfaces.
